Hair Clarifying: The Forgotten Step of a Truly Effective Routine

Dull, heavy hair that falls flat the day after washing, products that seem to work less well than before: you switch masks, serums or shampoos, with no lasting result. What if the problem wasn't your products, but what stops them from working? Clarifying is the most overlooked step of hair routines, and often the most decisive one.

WHAT IS HAIR CLARIFYING?

Clarifying means removing the makeup from the fiber: deeply clearing away what has built up on the lengths wash after wash. A regular shampoo mainly cleanses the scalp (sebum, sweat, pollution). A clarifying care tackles the buildup that gentle cleansers can't shift: silicones, quats, mineral oils, styling polymers, limescale.

It is the reset step. It makes the routine that follows truly effective.

WHY YOUR HAIR GETS SATURATED

Silicones and quats: a film that builds up

Silicones (dimethicone, amodimethicone…) coat the fiber and give instant softness. Quats, their cousins, do the same: they are found in many conditioners and masks, including from brands that call themselves natural. Wash after wash, this film thickens, even more so with styling products (hairsprays, mousses, sprays) and hard water.

What you see on your hair

  • Weighed-down, flat lengths with no movement, from the day after washing.
  • Dull shine: the film scatters light poorly.
  • Products that "slide off": they give surface softness, then nothing more.
  • Curls that lose their bounce and define less and less well.

THE TELLTALE SIGNS

  • Your hair gets greasy or heavy faster than before.
  • Your usual products no longer last beyond a day or two.
  • You often use styling products, creams, gels or finishing oils.
  • You live in a hard-water area.
  • You are switching from a conventional routine to a 100% natural-origin routine.

THE LAO CARE ROUTINE: CLEANSE, THEN REBUILD

STEP 0: SILICONE DETOX

Silicone Detox is a 200 ml clarifying cleansing paste, 100% natural origin and COSMOS ORGANIC certified. Its formula combines a duo of French clays (green Velay clay and white clay) with organic nettle hydrosol from Côte d'Or: in a single wash it removes silicones, oils, quats and styling buildup, without sulfates and without being harsh on the scalp. Use it as step 0, in place of your usual shampoo, before the rest of the routine.

  • Take a generous amount of paste and lather it between your hands.
  • On wet hair, apply first to the back of the head and the temples, then over the whole scalp.
  • Massage to activate the clays, then work it through the lengths down to the ends: that is where buildup collects.
  • Rinse thoroughly. Do not leave on.

Right afterwards, your hair may feel slightly "squeaky": a sign that it has been properly cleansed and is ready for its care.

NEXT: THE BOND REPAIR TREATMENT

Once cleansed, the fiber is ready for the Bond Repair Treatment: Bond Repair Shampoo, Hair Mask and Leave-In Cream. Its patented PEPTICARE® active, from camelina seed grown in France, regenerates over 73% of keratin bonds from the very first application of the complete protocol*. It is suited to brittle hair damaged by coloring, bleaching or heat. Use it as an intensive 1-month treatment, then twice a month for maintenance.

To get both steps together: the Bond Repair Treatment and Silicone Detox. If your hair isn't damaged, follow instead with the Lightness Routine (fine hair) or the Softness Routine (thicker hair).

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CLARIFY?

  • Up to 4 times a month, in place of your usual shampoo.
  • For maintenance: once every 2 to 3 weeks, to keep hair light and receptive to your care.
  • To switch to natural: once a week for 3 weeks, then your new routine.
  • Before coloring: 48 to 72 hours before to prepare the fiber, then wait at least 3 weeks after coloring before using it again.

MISTAKES TO AVOID

  • Confusing clarifying with stripping. A sulfate shampoo removes buildup, but it is harsh on the scalp and the cuticle. The goal is to cleanse without stripping.
  • Clarifying only the roots. Buildup sits mostly on the lengths and ends: work the paste right through to the tips.
  • Leaving it on. Silicone Detox is rinsed off straight away.
  • Skipping the rebuilding step. On damaged hair, follow with the Bond Repair Treatment.
  • Going straight back to silicones or quats. Choose products free from silicones and quats, otherwise the film comes back at the next wash.

IN CONCLUSION

Clarifying isn't a step reserved for a few special cases: it is the foundation of a routine that works. First cleanse with Silicone Detox, then rebuild with the Bond Repair Treatment. If your hair no longer responds to your products, this is probably the step you're missing.

FAQ: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS A CLARIFYING CARE?

A cleansing care designed to deeply remove what builds up on the lengths: silicones, quats, mineral oils, styling buildup. Where a regular shampoo mainly cleanses the scalp, a clarifier desaturates the fiber.

IS PEPTICARE® A PRODUCT?

No. PEPTICARE® is the patented active of the Bond Repair Treatment, found in the Bond Repair Shampoo, Hair Mask and Leave-In Cream. Silicone Detox prepares the fiber as step 0.

DOES SILICONE DETOX DAMAGE HAIR?

No. Its sulfate-free formula relies on gentle sugar-derived cleansers, a duo of clays and organic nettle hydrosol. The slightly "squeaky" feel after rinsing is normal: it shows the fiber has been cleansed. On damaged hair, follow with the Bond Repair Treatment.

CAN IT BE USED ON COLOR-TREATED HAIR?

Yes, at the right time: 48 to 72 hours before coloring, it helps pigments set more evenly. Avoid it right after coloring and wait at least 3 weeks.

IS IT SUITABLE FOR CURLY HAIR?

Yes, it is even an essential step: creams, gels and finishing oils build up quickly on the lengths. Once cleansed, curls get their bounce and definition back, and your styling products work fully again.

HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM A REGULAR SHAMPOO?

Shampoo is for everyday care, the clarifier resets the fiber, used less often. The two work together.
